Welcome

Welcome to the updated website known as Hewie's Favorites and Hewie's Views & Reviews. The site will also include my Blog. This is the first major update to the site which went on line in 1995 and updated a few years later, when we went to our own domain. We are now developing the website using Drupal. Thank you for bearing with us during the transition. For more information about our history, check out our About page.

Impressed with a Congressman

I just watched a program on C-Span, where Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican from California and the Chair of the Oversight & Government Reform Committee was with Craig Beilinson, of Microsoft Corp, senior director of Consumer Products. Issa was at the Consumer Electronics Show ( as I was), and was asking Beilinson some questions about their mobile initiatives, including Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8.

How to share a list of your Apps

I want to share a list of the Apps that I have downloaded and installed on my iPhone and iPad. I can find such a list in iTunes under Library/Apps. However, there is no way to save or print that list. I can also see my apps on the iPad by going to the Apps Store app and looking at "Purchased", but again, there is no way to have a list to share.

Problems Switching To Google Apps

Back in March 2010, the CIO of the City of Orlando announced that he was planning to save 60% of the annual cost of software licenses by switching the city to Google Apps. This week, after more than two years of trying, the City of Los Angeles has abandoned plans to migrate its police department to Google's hosted email and office application platform saying the service cannot meet certain FBI security requirements.

Does anyone know if Orlando made the switch?

How is it dealing with the same security issues?

How to Ask For Help

As a member of the Computer User Group community for many years, I frequently receive an email which starts out, "I have a quick question." The question is usually quick, but the answer can be quite involved. A little bit of information can cut down on the number of emails between us and help with the solution that is needed.

Steer Clear of AT&T CrossMedia

I just received an invitation to join the AT&T Crosswire Experience. They offered me a $15 incentive card and will add $10 every quarter that I remain an active panel member ($45 for the year). According to the letter, I would have to periodically complete a survey. That sounded like something I would like to do.

Printing a Font Catalog

I have 850 in my "fonts folder". However, as a whole, that is not a lot of fonts, but far more than I will ever use or want to. Most users do not realize that it is the operating system that stores and manages fonts, not the applications that use them. This is true of Windows and Macs.

Best Practices for Keeping Your Home Network Secure by NSA

The National Security Agency released a document in April 2011 about "Best Practices for Keeping Your Home Network Secure." The document is 10 pages long and goes into greater detail, but I have outlined the many topics. There are some important ideas suggested and worth considering for your home network.

How to Infect Your Computer

If you have ever wondered how your computer got infected or attacked, Fred Langa has written a blow-by-blow description on how it can happen. It is an article in the "Windows Secrets" Newsletter. To view the article on line go to http://windowssecrets.com/comp/110407/ and scroll to the Top Story.

Agree to Disagree

You are at your User Group meeting, or any volunteer organization, and someone comes up to you asks for you to run as an officer or a member of the Board. You are honored, hesitant about being able to do a good job, but you agree. You are elected and excitedly attend your first officers' meeting.
