Welcome to the updated website known as Hewie's Favorites and Hewie's Views & Reviews. The site will also include my Blog. This is the first major update to the site which went on line in 1995 and updated a few years later, when we went to our own domain. We are now developing the website using Drupal. Keep Your Friends - eMail Tip

When you pass on a funny joke or some information to several of your friends, I want you to do so without jeopardizing their privacy or upsetting them. I like a good joke. What I do not like is my email address exposed along with 20 or 30 of your friends’ addresses as well.

Windows 8 Training available for Free

I have to find 5 hours to view this course. You should, too, if you even think that you will go to Windows 8. The Lynda.com training videos are always 1st class and well done. This one is free until the 23rd.

First tests of my iPhone5

My iPhone 5 arrived today. I am keeping the 4s, but swapping the phone numbers. This required a trip to the AT&T store as the 5 uses a micro SIM chip, so a simple swap of the phone SIM chips could not be done. I had to get 2 new chips with the correct phone number for each chip.

Pay Cash for Online Purchases

I saw on the news last night that Wal-Mart is adding an option on their website when checking out. You now can use cash to pay for your online purchase.

During checkout, you can select the “cash” option and your shipping preference. You have 48 hours to take the printed order confirmation to the cash register at a Wal-Mart store. Once the order is paid, you can either arrange to have the items shipped to a store for free or to home or another address for a fee.

iCloud - An Explanation

I found what looks like an in depth explanation if iCloud. It has to be the longest blog article that I have ever seen. However, I have captured that blog to Evernote and made a PDF of it. It is over 100 pages but lots of large screen captures are included.

There are so many CPU chips it is hard to differentiate them and to know which the best when looking to purchase a new or even a used computer. I was in that position this past week. My desktop computer died and I started looking for a replacement. Comparing all of the models is overwhelming.

I lost a good friend this week. My only desktop computer, who has faithfully worked for me since 2007, has passed away after a brief illness. On Saturday, I could sense that she was not herself, so I ran a complete image of the hard drive. I knew the end was near, as it took 36 hours to complete the backup of 600 gigabytes.

I like to share information, especially with members of my user group. I read a lot of articles about computer hardware & software. When I find an article of interest, which may be news, pricing, reviews, or tutorials, I have to decide how to keep that information. I often save it as an Acrobat PDF file, or I may copy and paste the article and email to myself, or send the link to myself.
