++++ Google Viewer
Just when you think there is no way to improve a search engine, there's
the Google Viewer, http://labs.google.com/gviewer.html. You just type a few phrases. Instead of a link, you get a fully working preview of the Web sites as a slide show. If you don't look at any other links in this
edition, make sure that you check out this.
++++ More Google
Google's Froogle, http://froogle.google.com, aims to be the world's largest catalog. You find information about products for sale
online by locating stores that sell the item and pointing you directly to the place where you can make a purchase.
++++ Good and Bad Experience with new technology
This month I experienced the extremes
of technology in one undertaking. I decided to subscribe to the digital version of PC World Magazine. Following a link in an email, I filled out the on-line form and clicked on the "Submit" button to obtain my
instant issue. Nothing! I didn't receive a confirmation, so I clicked again and nothing. I decided that I either subscribed twice or didn't subscribe at all.
Combining technology, I phoned and e-mailed tech
support. After answers of having to wait 72 hours and then 7 working days to see if my subscription was in the system, I received an e-mail instruction of where to fax the order. Fax the order? Knowing that I didn't
have anything to lose, I tried the online order from a different computer with a different connection and it worked.
I have downloaded and enjoyed my first issue of PC World Digital using it's unique
interface. It appears that the pages are turning. All of the ads and articles have live links to web sites and articles on the web. There are several magazines that are available in this form. The only problem is
trying to read the magazine when in the bathroom.
To get a free single copy of PC World Digital, go to http://www.pcworld.com/resource/subservices.asp . There are several other magazine that use the same
interface such as "Business Week," "National Geographic Traveler, " and "PC Magazine."
++++ Flash Catcher
Have you ever been to a site that had a Flash animation that you wanted to save to enjoy,
share, or even to learn from a tutorial? I have found a shareware program that does just that. With Flash Catcher, you can download a Flash File(.swf) in just two clicks. Saving Flash can be as easy as saving a
Picture. Take a look at http://www.justdosoft.com/ .
++++ Just how much of a geek are you?
Answer a few questions on line and they will give you a detailed breakdown of your entire personality. Take a
break and see what it takes to be truly a geek. By the way, I am 68% geek. My results showed that "You are practically computer-literate, in an almost real sense. This could be a good thing, or a bad thing,
depending on whether you use your knowledge for good or for ill. Looking at your answers, I'd almost certainly say it was a bad thing." See http://www.vnunet.com/quiz/geeko.jsp .
