++++ Search Engine Wars
SeachEngineWatch.com reports that Yahoo! is purchasing Overture. You may ask why that is important to you. There appears to be a
consolidation of the search engines and search directories. One of my favorites for years was Alta Vista. They all but disappeared, but recently redesigned themselves to once again become a player. Another good
search engine has been alltheweb.com. Recently Overture purchased both Alta Vista and alltheweb. Overture sells keywords to the highest bidders, starting at 1 cent per word. Every time a site is accessed through one
of these links, your account is charged the current rate.
Overture has been in partnership with Yahoo! and MSN, as well as others. MSN has been working on its own spiders to collect websites for
its search engine. In the mean time it has been using Overture and Inktomi. Recently Yahoo! purchased Inktomi.
Confused yet? There is a good explanation of all of this at http://www.searchenginewatch.com/searchday/article.php/2234821 . To keep up with this entire facet, you really have to subscribe to the searchenginewatch.com newsletter at the same site.
What we are seeing is the search engine world is developing into a Google verses Yahoo! However, don't count out Microsoft's MSN search
engine, which may use Yahoo! for a while. Once their own software is completed, they may become the third player in this competition.
Bottom line. When searching, don't stick to one search engine. I use Google most of the time, but will also search using Yahoo!. Those of
us who are web designers need to keep up with the changes and how they affect our coding to leverage placement in search results.
++++ Lots of e-Newsletters
Speaking of newsletters, I have been updating my list of newsletters. I have listed most of the e-newsletters that I
receive on the website. I have spent quite a bit of time to document all of the newsletters that I actually receive, how often, a website to subscribe, and a very short description of each. You can find the list at http://www.hewie.net/nl.html . The list is over 90 different documents. Many of these are daily! Not counting the sp*m, I get lots of e-mail. However, I always enjoy getting e-mail from my readers.
++++ Unsolicited e-mail is costly
Unsolicited e-mail, known as sp*m, is very costly. A recent report states that Sp*m costs $874 per employee per year. Companies lose
approximately 1.4 percent of each employee's productivity each year due to sp*m. The average employee receives 13.3 sp*m messages each day. Employees spend, on average, 6.5 minutes per day managing sp*m. I guess
I am not the only one who gets messages to enlarge or shrink my body parts, my wallet, my bills, or my mortgage. I really don't care to purchase the world's smallest camera or look at your wife's or mother's
pictures. It still amazes me that there must be someone, somewhere that makes it worthwhile for these people to keep sending the messages.
++++ Cool clock
A few readers sent me the URL for a cool clock that follows your cursor around. It's worth a look, but I promise not to
make it a cursor at the site. Take a look at http://www.suite101.com/files/mysites/AskAlice/Clock.htm
