OptimizeXP by Keith Gilbert is written in an easy to understand way with complete sets of screen captures that explain the processes that he describes. What I liked is that the screen captures are accurate and complete. Too many times authors skip items that make their descriptions hard to follow or understand. Keith highlights each screen capture with a red box to show the area to view. There is a section on how to set up Zone Alarm that is second to none. Most novices will be able to follow his instructions. I used the section on Hard Disk Cleanup in my SIG meeting and it proved to be interesting and helpful. That chapter describes all of the items that are part of the hard disk cleanup program that is included in WindowsXP and how to use it. There are many good chapters in the book on removing and preventing spyware and viruses. Take a look at the author's site at http://www.optimizexp.net/ . The author has made some brave offers. He offers to send updates to the book when they are made and even free and automatically. Keith Gilbert also offers to help you via e-mail if you have a problem with any part of the book. Now, that's author support!. The price of the e-book is $29.95, but at this writing he has a special of $19.95. Even if that expires, you might get that price if you say that you read about the book in Hewie's Favorites. ++++ CCleaner is a free utility Keith Gilbert from OptimizeXP also sends an occasional newsletter which recently included a description of a freeware utility "ccleaner" (short for "Crap Cleaner" ). I tried it and it's a prize. It installed easily and took about 7 minutes to check my system. It found 1.8 gigabytes of items to delete. I must confess that I did have a bunch of stuff in the Trash. It looked at Windows with specific checkboxes under headings of Internet Explorer, Window Explorer, and the System, with some advanced settings that can be manually set by those more experienced. Under Applications, it will clean items under Firefox and Mozilla, and lists several of the software packages installed on your computer that it recognized. It also looks at multimedia programs, utilities, and Windows programs with check boxes to allow it to clean or not. Under Issues, there are items it checks under the headings of Registry Integrity and File Integrity. Some other options include listing all of your cookies and allowing you to pick and choose any or all to be deleted. There is an easy way to uninstall programs from this utility as well.
