++++ Limited software with a $400 video movie camera

Once again I have been making changes in my life. Although I am semi-retired, I am always looking for something to do to earn some extra money. My new enterprise created the need for a video camera. I have never owned one.

I only had a choice of a couple of models to fit my needs. I bought a Canon and was surprised that there is limited software that comes with the $400 camera. The camera takes stills as well as video and the only graphic software was photo editing and an album program. There was nothing to edit video.

Cables come with the camera, but the choice for software to edit the video is up to me. Luckily I only shoot the video and turn it over to someone else for editing, so I do not have to worry about it until I want to do some of my own videos.

++++ Worst Technology Products

PC World Magazine recently had an article about what they consider the 25 worst tech products of all time. http://pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,125772,pg,1,00.asp# I agree with some of their choices, but some I even liked. Their number one choice is America On Line (AOL). While over the years, AOL caused a lot of computer problems, they certainly were responsible for a lot of computer novices to join the online revolution.

Another of the worst product choices that I disagree with is the Iomega Zip drive. While it had it's problems, The Zip drive did give us the ability to save large files and large amounts of data on portable media for a reasonable cost. It was destined to be a short term technology. Of course I predicted that CD-ROM drives would be a 3 year technology, but I did buy a CD external reader for $1,000 in the early 90's. As you know, CD's are still around some 15 years later. Hey, I can't be right all of the time.

I do agree with a few of PC World's choices. Microsoft's Bob was on their list. It got Bill Gates a wife (his wife was on the development team), but was a useless piece of software. dBase IV was on list. Version IV for Windows was the successor or dBase III which owned 70% of the database market. dBase IV had so many problems that it's user base plummeted. It was years before some of the bugs were resolved, which was way too late.

Another product that I found to be useless when it came out was the CueCat. It was free from Radio Shack. There was software and the cute little hardware item that was a bar code reader. Its premise was to read bar codes in ads of items that interested you. Then you could connect to the web site associated with that product. There were a lot of privacy issues and no acceptance by the advertisers or the public. Some enterprising people played with the CueCat and found some bar Code uses for it, but it soon disappeared.

Read the article. You may have some other items that you think should replace those already on PC World's list.
